SHEILA METZNER (born 1939)

 

Metzner was born in Brooklyn and attended the Pratt Institute of Art.  After graduation, she was hired by Doyle Dane Bernach advertising agency as its first female art director.  While raising her family, she pursued a career in photography and began shooting for editorial clients such as VOGUE, Vanity Fair, and Rolling Stone.  Her first advertising client was Valentino, followed by Elizabeth Arden, Perry Ellis, Fendi, Revlon, Saks Fifth Avenue, Victoria’s Secret, and Ralph Lauren, among others.

Metzner has published five monographs: Objects of Desire (which won the American Society of Magazine Photographers Ansel Adams Award for Book Photography), Sheila’s Metzner’s Color, Inherit the Earth, Form and Fashion, and From Life, which was released by Rizzoli in 2017.

Her photographs are included in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, The International Center of Photography, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, The Chrysler Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, The J. Paul Getty Museum, and The Brooklyn Museum, as well as private collections worldwide.
