PATRICK DEMARCHELIER (1943-2022)

Patrick Demarchelier was born in France.  After beginning his career in photography in the 1970’s when he was hired by famed VOGUE creative director Alexander Liberman, Patrick Demarchelier continues to present his work on the covers and in the pages of the world’s most exclusive publications including the American and international editions of VOGUE, Vanity Fair, and many others.

Demarchelier has photographed the campaigns and commercials for brands such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Versace, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Revlon, Giorgio Armani, Carolina Herrera, Lancome, and Guerlain.  In addition to his extensive fashion and beauty work, Demarchelier has photographed the album covers for artists such as Madonna, Elton John, Billy Joel, Janet Jackson, and Mariah Carey.  In 1989, Princess Diana of Wales noticed his work in British VOGUE and requested that he take portraits of her and her sons, William and Harry. He became the first non-British official photographer of the Royal family and continued a friendship with Princess Diana until her death in 1997.

Demarchelier photographed the 2005 and 2008 editions of the famed Pirelli Calendar, and was featured in a special cameo role as himself in the 2008 film adaptation of “Sex and the City”.  In 2008, a museum retrospective of his work opened at the Petit Palais in Paris.
