Ellen von Unwerth talks to VOGUE about the evolution of photography and her latest project—the new Catrice campaign.
Ellen von Unwerth, who once found her way into photography through her career as a model, is now considered one of the most influential photographers of our time. Without any formal photography training, she has shaped the style of recent decades with her characteristic shots, which bring the models' personalities to the forefront. Her breakthrough came when she discovered the then 17-year-old Claudia Schiffer and her resemblance to Brigitte Bardot. Since then, she has not only photographed all the big names but has also shot for major magazines, including Vanity Fair, Dazed & Confused, and, of course, Vogue. Now, von Unwerth has captured Catrice's current campaign under the motto “Own Your Gaze.” We meet the photographer at the opening of the exhibition at the Fotografiska museum in Berlin, where she enthusiastically photographs the guests until shortly before the interview begins.
