Lee Miller. a ravishing American
Beauty, was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1907 and went to Paris
in 1929 after a short but successful career as a Vogue cover girl. She
arrived at the studio of Man Ray with an introduction from Edward Steichen,
and bacame his protege, collaborator and lover for three years. After
this period she set up her own photography studio.
Back in New York she opened a studio
where she accepted photographic assignments from Vogue and generally worked
in fashion as a model and photographer. Miller married and moved to Egypt,
where she photographed extensively. During World War II she became a war
correspondant. At war's end she went to Eastern Europe where she photographed
until she was arrested by Russian soldiers in Hungary. She returned to
London and Married Roland Penrose. Lee Miller dided in 1977.
