DUNESKurt Markus was born in Roundtrip, Montana in 1947. He has photographed the West: the landscape and cowboy life, fashion and travel. His work has been exhibited widely and has appeared in numerous magazines. His books include: "After Barbed Wire" 1985, "Buckaroo" 1987, "Boxers" 1998, and "Cowpuncher" 2000.
"The majority of these photographs were made in Namibia, Africa, a kind of dune capital of the world. My first trip there, in 2001, was exploratory; the second was for keeps.
Alone I spent two weeks with nothing in my mind but shouldering my camera and entering a landscape that would be totally transformed by light. Shapes and lines invisible in the flat illumination of mid-day etched themselves wonderously on my film come morning and late afternoon.
In the evening, when the sun had left and rendered the dunes mute, I chose a high dune with a view of endless desert upon which to sit, drink from my water bottle, and feel the sweat on my back dry and cool. It was what I have of religion."
