Howard Schatz was born in Chicago. He trained as a retina specialist at Johns Hopkins University. While living and practicing as a retina specialist in San Francisco, Schatz worked first exclusively as a fine art photographer. He moved to New York in 1995. His work is in the permanent collections of the International Center of Photography, the Musee de L'Elysee, the University of California Museum of Art, the Oakland Museum and in private collections worldwide. The photographs of Howard Schatz are exhibited in museums and photography galleries internationally and are included in innumerable private collections. He has received international acclaim for his work, which has been published in eighteen monographs. His most recently published, WITH child, is the result of a 20-year long exploration of the landscape of the human body in the last two weeks of pregnancy. It is his eighteenth book. Looking ahead to the fall of 2012, Sports Illustrated will published Schatz's monumental study of boxing and boxers: AT THE FIGHTS: Inside the World of Professional Boxing.
